Everett L. Glenn joined Quincy Jones, Louis Gossett Jr., Gabrielle Union, Mya,
Master P., Victoria Rowell and Byron Cage at the 37TH Annual Congressional Black
Caucus Legislative Conference in our nation’s capital. The
theme of the conference, “Unleashing Our Power,” challenged
legislators and citizens to use their collective power to level the playing field
for African Americans. The Conference also recognized the historic number
of Congressional Black Caucus members leading congressional committees. This
year’s conference provided an unprecedented opportunity for those in attendance
to not only join in the discussion of all of the issues of importance to the African-American
community, but also gave those in attendance the opportunity to be a part of this
historic time as the Congressional Black Caucus developed and implemented its
legislative action items for the 110th Congress. The conference program
included over 70 seminars, workshops and information forums on relevant topics
that most in attendance agreed captured the concerns of African Americans.
The sessions addressed challenges facing underserved populations such as rebuilding
New Orleans, the HIV/AIDS pandemic, genocide in Darfur, unemployment and child
welfare. Other sessions highlighted successes and provided critical information
to help build strong individuals, organizations and communities. “This
history is remarkable and represents the blood, sweat and tears of our ancestors.
We must not only honor this history but also seize the opportunity to empower
our communities,” stated Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, Member
of Congress, Chairwoman, Congressional Black Caucus. ESP
CEO/President Everett Glenn was selected by Congresswoman Tubbs-Jones
to join NFL Hall-of-Famer Jim Brown, William C. Rhoden, author of The $40
Million Dollar Slaves, Carlos Fleming, VP-Tennis, IMG, Keven Davis, Partner,
Garvey Schubert Barer, Jakki Nance, Executive Director, The Lebron James Family
Foundation, and Ken Harvey, former NFL player and CEO/President of JAKA Consulting
for the issues panel, “African-American Athletes: Roles, Representation
and Expectations.” The panel examined issues concerning money,
money management, civic and philanthropic activities, image and expectations within
the community. “The
time is right, and now is the time for us to put aside our differences and come
together to gain greater control over one of our community’s most valuable
natural resources, the athletic talent of our young men and women, and our rightful
share of the $350 billion their athletic talent generates each year,” says
Glenn, who has teamed up with a host of business and professional organizations
of color with a view towards making the dream a reality. ESP also
sponsored a table at the Emerging Leaders Empowerment Series luncheon hosted by
award-winning actress Victoria Rowell and sponsored by Verizon. For
