Congresswoman Laura Ricardson, 37th
District, California, and ESP President Everett L. Glenn
ESP CEO/President Everett Glenn and his son, Associate General
Counsel Justin Glenn, joined Congresswoman Laura Richardson, State Assembly Majority
Leader, Karen Bass, Mayor Bob Foster, Harbor Commissioners James Hankla, Doris
Topsy-Elvord and Mike Walter, City Clerk Larry Herrera, Superintendent Chris Steinhauser
and Chief of Police Anthony Batts at the 6th Annual Educational Symposium at Long
Beach Poly High. The symposium, a joint effort of Academic UpRise and the Long
Beach Unified School District, promotes quality education and career interest
among Middle and High School students throughout the City of Long Beach.
Academic Up-rise Inc. is a provider of tutoring service in core high school
subjects and case management assistance for at-risk and homeless students attending
public schools in Long Beach and vicinity. The purpose of this program is to develop,
implement and evaluate new methods by which to tutor and prepare "at-risk"
students and athletes for standardized testing, and to help them to pass high
school core subjects. This program is based on a seven-stage collaborative that
links the local school district, social workers assisting homeless shelters, PTO/PTA's,
local Food Banks, Community organizations, faith based organizations, and local
government agencies providing assistance to "at-risk" students. The
purpose of this partnership is to develop and implement innovative curricular
activities to help students matriculate into high school and enable them to take
advantage of future life improvement opportunities. ESP President Everett
Glenn joined Doug Robinson, Vice President for Student Services, Cal State Long
Beach, Board of Education President Felton Williams, Anthony Ross, Vice President
for Student Affairs, Cal State Los Angeles, and Ron Mincy, Professor of Social
Welfare Policy, Columbia University, on the President’s Forum to discuss
and identify an action plan to address the enrollment crisis among Black and other
underrepresented males in college. “We have a power potential in our youth,
and we must have the courage to change old ideas and practices so that we might
direct that power towards good ends,” said ESP President Everett Glenn.
“We must never put a tape measure on our children, but must ensure that
whatever they desire to be, and can be, will come to fruition. We are the foundation
that helps to stabilize our children, and the glue that helps to hold them together
as they process life as they see it and they see it through us. For
